Our Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale Fundraiser on Sunday, November 4, was a resounding success in every aspect! The enjoyment and satisfaction on the faces seen throughout our CommUNITY Center was a thing of beauty! Thank you to everyone in our church community who shared their time, talent, and taste buds for this special event! Your support has blessed our church’s general fund!
What makes food and fellowship such a successful combination? There are many ways to build community, but none as long-standing and successful as breaking bread together. In fact, it is one of the primary reasons ancient peoples gathered, so it is very much in our shared history. When we share food, we share respect for one another, help put others at ease, and reflect upon our shared humanity. It is a delicious way to remember that we belong to one another and to the community we care for.
And, although I like to say, “life is not a contest”, this particular event was, well, a contest! And two of our chili submissions came out on top! Taking top honors again this year was Jim Jagger with his “Unity Chili”, and second place was taken by Donna Burkholder with her “Kid Friendly Chili” – showing that we are all united and all kids at heart! The Bake Sale table did a brisk business from the moment the doors opened as well! And, all combined, the Chili Cook-Off and Bake Sale netted just over $610!
Hidden within this fundraising event, and at his own humble request, was the one-year anniversary celebration of Rev. Jimmie’s time at Unity of San Antonio. The fundraising event was the perfect celebration for a man who asked that we find a time to come together in support of our church community and its needs. The mark of a true leader – putting the good of the whole above his own. The handmade oversized card presented to Rev. Jimmie from the children and teens capped off his celebration and contained beautiful sentiments straight from the hearts of the YM youth. Our department was overjoyed to host this fundraising event in recognition of the support and love shown to us as we have expanded our classroom space over the past few months.
As we head into the holiday season, with Thanksgiving and Christmas already knocking on our doors, your Youth Ministry children, teens, families, and volunteers would like to express our gratitude for the gifts each and every one of you are to this community!
