“Exploring God through the Eyes and Lives of Children and Teens” Jennifer Gates, Youth & Family Ministry Director
“Our mission is not to entertain the children, but to call them out. To be always entertained is to be dwarfed and dependent. To be ‘called out’ is to follow the harmonious law of the soul’s unfoldment. Who meddles with the rosebud? What fingers are deft enough to pry open that marvel of folded beauty? We are wise enough to leave it alone to follow the glad law of its own unfolding, but our children! Have we dealt as wisely with these buds of marvelous possibilities? Have we always remembered that they, too, must quicken and unfold through the innate law of their own genius?” –Myrtle Fillmore
In our Youth and Family Ministry classrooms, we are currently exploring the meaning of God as a unique expression of the Divine that lives through each of us. Our pre-school and elementary children continue to examine the qualities of God this week while our teens continue their discussion of “What Does God Mean in My Life?”
The Uniqueness of God has been contemplated by our younger children and their adult volunteers over the past several weeks as they have looked at the questions: What is God?; What does God look like?; and When Can I Talk to God? This week, the study continues as they examine the idea, of the silence – “In the silence, God speaks to me. I listen to God.” Even our youngest children spend a few moments during each class sitting quietly and learning about the idea of meditation. And, in almost direct opposition to that, one of the favorite times each Sunday has become the sharing of this unit’s song (complete with hand held instruments!), “I am the Radiant Life of God.” Ask one of our youngsters to share this song with you and soon your toes will be tapping right along with the beat!
Next door to the rousing sounds of the interactive pre-school and elementary classrooms, our teens have been delving into the idea of the meaning of God. A recurring theme is the gift of Unity Church which allows for an open and tolerant interpretation of God within each person’s life. Our middle and high school aged youth have mulled over the questions, “What Do I Know About God?” “What Would I Like to Know About God?” And “Where Do I See God?” This week, they are incorporating those previous questions with their thoughts about “What Does Unity Say about God?” Teens are invited to explore their questions and ideas about God in an accepting environment which encourages them to share, explore, and question their thoughts and beliefs about God, Divinity, and the Spiritual Path.
Our Youth and Family Ministry department is a wonderful space that allows for the growth and development of every age and stage – from birth through adulthood. Just as we grow spiritually, our actual class sizes are growing as well. We are thrilled to have added many new children and families to our YM Program, and we have several new classroom angel volunteers beginning their paths of service with us this month. Classroom teachers are still being sought, so if you are ready for a vibrant, dynamic experience in which you grow and explore alongside our amazing children and teens, please let me hear from you!
