What’s Under Your Tree? Jennifer Gates, Youth and Family Ministry Director
If you happen to be active on any social media platform, you are familiar with memes – media images that combine imagery with catchphrases. One in particular caught my eye the other day as my thoughts were consumed by holiday preparation: gift buying, party planning, family connecting, and so on. The meme had a photo of a gorgeously decorated Christmas tree and the words, “This year, I’m going to lay under the tree to remind everyone of the gift that I am.” At first, I chuckled at the imagery this conjured inside my head, but over the days that followed, as this image kept popping up in my mind’s eye, I began to think of the underlying nature, the metaphysics, behind this simple, humorous idea.
What if, instead of concerning ourselves with the price tags, brand labels, and status symbols of the world around us, we focused instead on the intangible gifts in our lives? What if, we imagined a bow atop our loved ones’ heads? What if, we symbolically placed the important people in our lives at the center of our holiday décor?
The funny Christmas meme has become a guidepost for my holiday planning. When the hours in a day feel as though they are slipping away and the to-do list feels unruly, I close my eyes and put that bow atop the head of my children, spouse, mother, friends, imagining them sitting comfortably under the tree; taking a few moments to consider the gifts that are provided to me every day by those whom I love.
So, this holiday season, let the memes be your guide. Look for the hidden treasures around you. Decorate your loved ones, wrapping them up as the beautiful gifts they are. And, while you’re at it, go ahead and place yourself under that tree, remembering the true gift that your life is to the world that you inhabit. Merry Christmas!
