Jennifer Gates Llamas, Youth and Family Ministry Director –
Fifth Sundays at Unity of San Antonio are Family Sundays! When we are meeting in person, this means that all ages are invited to join together in our sanctuary to enjoy an intergenerational message and time of celebration. Spending time together with family, friends, and our spiritual community allows us to develop our connections and learn more about one another. During the month of January, our youth ministry lessons have focused on learning more about our own personal history and the history of Unity. We also continue to recognize our connections with one another and with all that is in our world.
On this Family Sunday, here are a few ideas for family groups or friends to participate in as we grow our connections even while practicing social distancing and caring for our fellow humankind.
Choose a theme and plan a picnic. Have each participant think of a food, decoration, or venue that matches the theme. Let everyone contribute in their own way, and then celebrate outdoors together.
Clear off a table and open a puzzle box! Think about the ages of the people who will be helping put the puzzle together. Let everyone help in creating order from chaos.
Head to the kitchen and create a family favorite dessert or meal. Think of ways that all family members or friends can contribute to the final product. If some are not fans of cooking, maybe they can set the table or choose some music to dine by.
Plan a treasure hunt either inside or out. Pick a theme and make a list of items to be found. You can make a treasure map for everyone to follow or just make a list and let people check it off as each thing is found.
Put on your walking shoes and head outside to collect natural items – twigs, leaves, rocks, flowers. Afterwards, use your collection to create a collage.
Settle in for a day of movie watching. Ask each family member or friend to choose a favorite movie. Pop some popcorn. Grab some fluffy blankets and settle in for a relaxing evening at home.
Regardless of what you choose to do as you celebrate together, our wish is for you to feel peace in your heart, harmony in your home, and your connection to all the families and friend groups who are sharing similar times together!
