Jennifer Gates, Youth and Family Ministry Director
During the month of September, the Youth Ministry Department is excited to study and celebrate both World Day of Prayer and International Day of Peace.
The first two Sundays of the month, our children, teens, and adult volunteers will focus on the Courage to Heal: I am a healing presence. Through stories, discussion, and creative projects, our children and teens will turn their energy towards the collective power of prayer and will grapple with questions that can guide them to their own personal expression of courage and healing in the world around them.
World Day of Prayer is a 24-hour prayer vigil and meditation, and September 13, 2018, marks the 25th anniversary of the event. Thousands of individuals and communities around the world will come together to affirm and celebrate the true spiritual nature of healing.
The 3rd and 4th Sundays of September, our YM department will harness that healing energy as we focus on the topic of peace in our world. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, who were art teachers at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. The project was quickly embraced by their students and the entire school community and by millions of art teachers, teachers, parents, children and adults who desire peace in our world. Through discussion of the peace process in our own lives, we will learn more about the ways in which we can create internal peace, peace in our families, our communities, and the world around us.
The first Pinwheels for Peace were installed on Sept. 21, 2005. Since then, we have grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted the first year, to four million pinwheels in 2016! On Sunday, September 23, our children and teens will host a Pinwheels for Peace celebration as we display our own creations! To learn more about Pinwheels for Peace, visit www.pinwheelsforpeace.com.
REMINDER: Sunday, September 30, is a Fifth Sunday Family Sunday. There will be no Youth Ministry classes on this day.
