A “Behind the Scenes” Story by Birdie Shawker, Communications Coordinator, UCSA
Remember that “Fast Forward” initiative that we, as a CommUNITY, created a while back? I do. If not, click here to read about them: Fast Forward Initiatives . I created the layout of that publication, and edited the wording. Since it’s a five year plan, I sometimes look back, and see how far we have come.
I also read church communications periodicals and follow church communications groups on Facebook. I think about my work, and how to do it better, often. I have a mind that is thirsty for knowledge of how to do my work skillfully. So when I learned all you needed was a TV and a flash drive to create a simple electronic bulletin board…..I got excited! I remembered this was one of the Fast Forward Technology Intentions for our CommUNITY Center!
I excitedly informed Rev. Jimmie of what I’d learned. He’s knowledgeable about technology and agreed this would be a worthwhile endeavor. So, I created a file of images on a flash drive, inserted it into the donated TV….and nothing. I tried and tried, and nothing seemed to work. The Board was just getting out of a meeting, and saw me struggling. I love our board, they are so involved and engaged in our community! Well, that evening we all engaged ourselves in trying to make that electronic bulletin board work, including Rev. Jimmie. Nothing we did seemed to help. We tried and failed and tried and laughed and made jokes. I looked at everyone and said… “Perhaps if I rest I can wrap my mind around this.” Rev. Jimmie thought a new flash drive might help.
Sure enough, some shuteye and a new flash drive did the trick. But how wonderful is it that the Board of Trustees and Rev. Jimmie, after a long meeting, would come help me? That’s the kind of people who lead us. I’ve seen Rev. Jimmie roll up his sleeves and help move brush! I know I can go to the BOT or Rev. Jimmie for support and I will absolutely get it. Every single time.
I don’t do my work in a vacuum. It takes a village and all sorts of “behind the scenes” work, love, fun, support for one another to get the job done. These opportunities to serve one another in love can’t happen without your financial support. Click here to become an Intentional Giver. And if you are interested in becoming more engaged in our community – so that you can have some fun like we did that night – click here and check out all the opportunities.
