The Secret Benefits of Sacred Service by Lori Alspaugh, Office Manager, Youth Ministry Team Member, Unity of SA
When I first started attending Unity of San Antonio services, I was startled by all of the hugging. I came from a family where hugging was reserved for special occasions, like moving away from home, so it was challenging for me to adjust to this practice. However, I quickly realized that no one hugged the people in the sound room, so I volunteered to be a slide operator on the Multimedia Team. I had found my niche!
Much to my surprise, I soon discovered that I had found the perfect way to make friends in our community. I always had something in common to discuss with my fellow team members, and I got to know them very well. In addition, I was able to meet all of the musicians and guest speakers, and I got to interact with Rev. Linda, rather than just hearing her speak on Sunday. I even learned how to hug!
If you are looking for a way to make friends within our community, I encourage you to consider Sacred Service as a volunteer on one of our teams. You may find, as I did, that you have also found an easy way to live our core values of loving, transforming, empowering, community, and welcoming. And hugging is optional!
