The Joy of Social Hour! De Anna Melendez
For centuries food has brought families, cultures, and people together. Food is the universal language for all of mankind, a language of love and joy. In the Bible, there are several passages that reference food. One of my favorites is: “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25 | NIV”
In Unity, the Power “Life” is represented — …”The ability to energize, vitalize, enliven, animate, and invigorate… We are to experience life as an idea that not only enriches the soul, but also lifts the physical body into a perfect expression of the pattern God implanted in it from the beginning.”
This past Sunday during the social hour did you notice that the community center after services was filled with congregants? The aroma of turkey warming, the sound of laughter and conversations among members and guests were heard throughout the building, and Dutch was in the corner serving Blue Bell vanilla ice cream on cones at his make-shift ice cream station, a favorite dessert for the children and adults alike.
I’ve been serving as a social host team member since April of 2016 and it has been a privilege and a joy to serve in this capacity. It’s magical to watch faces light up once they have enjoyed a wonderful meal, in-depth conversations, fellowship, and friendship. It does something special to our Spirits. The kind gestures of a member’s word of thanks or compliments for that special dish you made, not to mention their satisfied appetites, go a long ways. Our social hour at Unity is one of my favorite events.
I was first introduced to Unity in La Brea, California in 2004. The social hour after services is one of my fondest memories of my Unity experiences. I was living in Southern California to be close to my youngest son. I was away from family and friends in Texas and missing home. The Unity family became my family. I made such special friendships during this time. They provided me with unconditional love, acceptance, and warmth that will always be remembered.
If you are new to us or not, we invite you to participate in our social hour each week immediately following Sunday service. Join us as we create community with one another. We are a family and special Spiritual community here at Unity of SA.
If you are looking for a ministry where you can serve, we have a space for you!
Lastly, to the lovely member who made the suggestion to place the broccoli recipe in this week’s newsletter (made with fresh broccoli from a local community garden), here you go! Look below and you will find it.

Discover the joy of Sacred Service with the Social Host Team. Social Hosts serve once a month and are provided training before they begin serving. Social Hosts set up light snacks after church, providing others an opportunity to connect with CommUNITY.
Serving on the Social Host Team provides spiritual growth by facilitating greater understanding of our Oneness, one connection at a time. Social Hosting also creates CommUNITY, renewing a sense of connection with each other, ourselves, and the Source. Contact us if you have questions.
