With Rev. Jimmie Scott
As a perpetual student of life, I am confronted everyday with its seeming contradictions. Each contradiction convinces me more and more that the contradictions are a result of our unwillingness as a species to master our emotions. Oftentimes, we surrender to cynicism because we are too lazy to confront a grander possibility.
Both are embedded in our collective historical memory, but they are only contradictions because of personal beliefs.
I, for instance, see hope in every situation I encounter, but I have a friend who is cynical about every situation. Cynicism has been a part of the collective experience since the beginning of existence, but so has hope.
What intrigues me is why some choose one, while others choose the other. Yet they both inhabit the same circumstances.
Maybe the answer is in our fears.
Fear imprisons, faith liberates, fear paralyzes, faith empowers, fear disheartens, faith encourages…
“Hope is a gift you don’t have to surrender, a power you don’t have to throw away.” -Rebecca Solnit
