Lisa Garcia, Member Nominee: Lisa was born in South Texas and grew up on the Gulf Coast in the town of Los Fresnos. She holds a B.B.A. in Computer Information Systems, from Texas A&M – Kingsville, an M.B.A. in Management from Our Lady of the Lake University and is certified in General Non-Profit Management and Leadership Development. She also has two years of course work towards a Ph. D in Leadership Studies from OLLU. Lisa has 15+ years in the nonprofit sector and is the Director of Business Operations for Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas with complete administrative and operational responsibility for information technology, data, business support and property. Lisa began attending Unity Church of San Antonio in August of 2018, and immediately knew she had found her spiritual home — she became a member within a few months. She enjoys serving as a celebration host and attributes Unity for her spiritual awakening. Lisa has a zest for living life to the fullest and feels an abundance of happiness in giving back to the CommUnity. On her downtime she loves to explore new places, meet new faces, spend time with loved ones, and is always up for going on long walks with her hyper little dog, Hakuna Matata.
Jim Jagger, Member Nominee: Jim Jagger was born in Minneapolis, Kansas and grew up on a wheat and cattle farm that had been homesteaded by his great-grandfather in 1866. Jim believes life is a series of experiences, and some of his include attending Kansas State University and graduating with a B.S. in Speech and Drama. He worked as a social worker. He attended Emporia State University to get his secondary education teaching certificate. Upon graduation, he was hired to teach speech and drama at Stockton High School in western Kansas. He has worked as a published freelance photographer and writer. Later he spent a year in Iowa working for a social action organization, promoting employer provided health care. He was hired as the Rural Arts Circuit Rider by the Kansas Arts Commission to help rural communities develop arts programming. He has a background in sales in several areas including automotive expertise. He has studied and practiced hypnosis and continues this practice on a part time basis, with an office in Unity Heights. It was in Lawrence that he first found Unity Church, in the 1980s. He joined the church and became a prayer chaplain and served on the Board of Trustees. Jim moved to Minneapolis, where there was no Unity church nearby. He found Sunset Spiritualist Church (an independent Spiritualist Church.) After several years of field training, he was ordained as a minister in the church. He reconnected with his junior high girlfriend Marcia who lived in San Antonio. They decided to get together again, completing the circle. After he moved to San Antonio, they found Unity Church of San Antonio, and joined the church. Jim serves as a Prayer Chaplain and does pre-service meditations. He knows that Unity of San Antonio is his spiritual home.
Sam Maropis, Member Nominee: Sam Maropis grew up as a Greek Orthodox member at his local churches, in San Antonio, California and Ohio and has been a life long meditator. He began meditating in 1979 and for the most part has been meditating for 40 years. Many years ago he began seeking a church that more closely aligned to his inner beliefs, hence came to Unity, fell in love with the service which more closely aligns to his meditation practice and saw the need to help where he could. Sam Maropis has been married to Ruth Lindly for 32 years, has two daughters, Annie (age 25) and Tessa (age 21) and has lived in San Antonio since 2002. He now owns a property management company and is willing to work to help Unity by serving on the board.
Flavio Vilches Member Nominee: Flavio was born and raised in Mexico City. He has a physics and engineering background. Currently he is a systems engineer in a company he owns and operates. Flavio was born into a chaotic family. He started questioning different aspects of the religion he was born into, so he started his quest to finding answers somewhere else. After a lot of church “hopping,” he found Unity in 1998, and has been attending UCSA since then. Flavio currently serves in the board of trustees at UCSA. To him, spiritual development is extremely important. Flavio has four children: Karen, Erick, Oliver and Giovanna. The first three are young adults, while Giovanna attends UCSA every other weekend with the Uniteens. Flavio is an avid Unity student, and enjoys attending as many classes and conferences as possible.
