Tim Torres, Chair (Pictured center, in the rear.) Tim Torres is a New Orleans native, retired Air Force officer, and an attorney with his own practice emphasizing preventive law for families. He was raised Catholic, then worshipped in a fundamentalist Christian church as a young adult. He and his wife Valerie joined their first Unity church in 1992. Their blended family includes several grandchildren. Tim first began attending UCSA in 2003. He says, “I have devoted a lot of myself to spiritual practice, especially these past few years, and my experience of life was profoundly transformed. It is important to me to support others on their path while I continue mine, and there is nowhere I would rather do that than among my spiritual family at Unity Church of San Antonio (UCSA.)”
Donna Burkholder, Vice Chair (Pictured center, in the front.) Donna Burkholder is an Air Force “brat” but can claim to be a true Texan since she was born in Fort Worth. She retired from a 37 year career as a mortgage lender and is enjoying more time with her grandchildren and volunteer activities with Neighborhood Housing Services of San Antonio and UCSA. Donna has been married to Jimmy for 39 years and they have two daughters and 4 grandchildren. Although raised Catholic, she began searching for a church home in her twenties. She attended Unity Church of San Antonio with her mother over 30 years ago and taught Sunday school for a few years. After moving to the Dallas area after her mother’s passing she returned to San Antonio in 2004 and has been attending UCSA since then. “The UCSA mission and vision statement are a foundation for full and joyous living. With the building blocks of divine powers strengthened through study and prayer, I strive to inspire love and kindness.” She has been a member since 2006. She currently serves as an usher and Office Angel.
Karen Cozean, Secretary (Pictured far left, in the rear.) Karen was born and raised in Ann Arbor and Dexter Michigan. She received a BS degree in Occupational Therapy from Eastern Michigan University. After graduation, she entered the Army as a direct commission officer and served for 30 years. While in the Service, she completed two Masters Degrees in Management and Strategic Studies. She presently works for RISE Rehabilitation, an equine center that provides therapeutic riding and hippo-therapy to help children and veterans with physical, emotional, and cognitive disabilities. Karen became a member of UCSA in May of 2015 and considers Unity members her family. She enjoys serving as an Usher and Prayer Chaplain. Karen is grateful for the many blessings she has received from members and she considers it an honor to serve and give back to the Unity community.
Steve Meigs, Treasurer (Pictured front, center.) Steve Meigs was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and grew up in a military family. As such, his early years were spent moving from place to place across the United States and to overseas postings that included Guam, Okinawa, and Germany. After graduating from high school, he chose to continue a “military life” and attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina where he graduated with a B.A. in English and a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Steve completed a 28-year career in the Air Force as a healthcare executive in 2004 and began a second career in the private sector working in the managed care, health information technology, and management consulting fields. Steve is currently on faculty at Walden University teaching in the Masters and Doctorate of Healthcare Administration programs. Steve and his wife Maggie began attending UCSA in 2011 after transferring their membership from Unity of Phoenix. They feel blessed and grateful to be part of this wonderful spiritual community. Steve considers serving on the Board of Trustees at Unity Church of San Antonio a tremendous honor. He is grateful for this opportunity to serve our community.
Juliana (Julie) Stith, Member-at-Large (Pictured left, front and middle.) Juliana (Julie) Stith, Member-at-Large (Pictured left, front and middle.) Juliana retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service in 2006. Post military retirement, she worked as a Financial Analyst in San Diego, CA until relocating to San Antonio, TX. After volunteering with various San Antonio nonprofit agencies, Juliana discovered her passion for working with military veterans and particularly those faced with mental health challenges. She now works as a Military Navigator and is pursuing licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Juliana began attending UCSA in 2013 and on day one knew she had found her spiritual home. Juliana currently serves in the Youth Ministry as a Unikids (elementary age) facilitator. She is honored to be reconsidered for service on the Board of Trustees at UCSA. Juliana considers it an awesome responsibility as well as a meaningful opportunity to be of service. She lives in San Antonio with her husband, Christopher Poole, son Isaiah, and dog Lexie.
Suzy Crowley, Member-at-Large (Pictured far left, in the front.) Suzy Crowley has been a member of Unity Church of SA for the last eleven years. She has been attending Unity Churches for the last fifteen years. She’s a wife and mother of three children. She learned Unity Principles by becoming a Sunday school teacher, serving for fifteen years. Suzy supported the opening of a new Unity Church in North Dallas before moving to San Antonio. She facilitated in the formation of the Youth Department at Unity Center of Light. Suzy previously served on the Board of Monte Vista Montessori, as well as Frisco Montessori. She has experience in various Boards of volunteer activities and parents organizations, including Girl Scout Leadership and Treasurer. Professionally, she imports on a wholesale level essential oils from South Africa. Also, related to that position, she is working on building a community effort in South Africa for a group in need of personal empowerment. Suzy describes herself as, “A continuous student of awakening to greater consciousness and connections with Spirit.”
Sam Maropis, Member (Pictured left in the rear, center.) Sam Maropis grew up as a Greek Orthodox member at his local churches, in San Antonio, California and Ohio and has been a life long meditator. He began meditating in 1979 and for the most part has been meditating for 40 years. Many years ago he began seeking a church that more closely aligned to his inner beliefs, hence came to Unity, fell in love with the service which more closely aligns to his meditation practice and saw the need to help where he could. Sam Maropis has been married to Ruth Lindly for 32 years, has two daughters, Annie (age 25) and Tessa (age 21) and has lived in San Antonio since 2002. He now owns a property management company and is willing to work to help Unity by serving on the board.
Flavio Vilches, Member (Pictured far right.) Flavio was born and raised in Mexico City. He has a physics and engineering background. Currently he is a systems engineer in a company he owns and operates. Flavio was born into a chaotic family. He started questioning different aspects of the religion he was born into, so he started his quest to finding answers somewhere else. After a lot of church “hopping”, he found Unity in 1998, and has been attending UCSA since then. Flavio currently serves in the board of trustees at UCSA. To him, spiritual development is extremely important. Flavio has four children: Karen, Erick, Oliver and Giovanna. The first three are young adults, while Giovanna attends UCSA every other weekend with the Uniteens. Flavio is an avid Unity student, and enjoys attending as many classes and conferences as possible.
Rev. Jimmie Scott Member, Senior Minister UCSA (Pictured to the right, center.) Prior to serving at UCSA, Rev. Jimmie served as the Pastoral Care Minister at Unity of Phoenix for nine years, where he was well loved, appreciated, and known for his compassionate demeanor, as well as his wisdom. He also served at First Church Unity in Nashville, TN. It is widely known that as Associate and later Lead Minister of the once tiny community, his leadership facilitated the growth of this church that now has over 500 congregants. Rev. Jimmie has a wealth of various experiences in ministry. He has served as Chairman of the Executive Board for the Association of Unity Churches International, now known as Unity Worldwide Ministries. Rev. Jimmie has also served as the chaplain at the Unity Institute, now known as Unity Worldwide Spiritual Institute. Rev. Jimmie served at Renaissance West, Inc. in Kansas City, MO as a member of their Board of Directors. As Associate Minister at Unity Renaissance Church in Chesapeake, VA, he had multiple responsibilities: supervising the finance department, and leading both the Chaplain Program and the Youth Education Department. Rev. Jimmie has served the communities he resided in well. He was vice chairman of COPE, a job training and placement organization for people with mental and physical challenges. He was a past chairman of the advisory board of Community Enhancement, an alcohol and drug abuse council for teens. He also served as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau, as an advisor for Junior Achievement, and as a counselor for abused and neglected children.
