Pathways to Peace, Jennifer Gates, Youth and Family Ministry Director
Peace cannot be kept by force;
it can only be achieved by understanding. – Albert Einstien
Today in youth ministry, we will focus on what the word “peace” means, how we can put peace into action in our everyday lives, and we will begin to think about what it means to truly understand another person’s or group’s perspective. Our premise is that true change, true tolerance, and a true shift in consciousness can more readily be accomplished when we understand others around us.
On September 3 and 17, we will be crafting pinwheels for the Pinwheels for Peace project. On September 24, we will make poster collages on the topics of peace, empathy, and tolerance and then lead a Pinwheels for Peace ceremony immediately following the Sunday service.
Adult volunteers will share information with children and teens about:
Sept 3: What it means to be part of a family, looking at how “family” is defined
Sept 17: What it means to be part of a group (friends, school, church, city) and how using empathy can help us better understand the group as a whole
Sept 24: What it means to be a peaceful person – how our inner guidance, knowledge and light can lead us to be more tolerant and accepting of people, society, and the world around us.
Children and teens will engage in meaningful discussions about a variety of roles they play – child, friend, observer, volunteer, student, etc., in relation to groups to which they belong. In order to make these discussion more concrete, each child and teen will contribute to our pinwheel creations, collage posters, and Pinwheels for Peace ceremony during the month of September.
Principle #3: I create my life experience by what I choose to think, believe and feel.
Principle #5: I must live the Truth that I know!
