Q&A About Unity Church of San Antonio (UCSA) Core Values – Steve Meigs, UCSA Board of Trustees Member
What are core values? Why are core values important? Does UCSA have core values? If so, where did they come from and what are the UCSA core values? How can I learn more about these core values?
These are all good questions that I will try to answer in the following article.
What are core values? To answer this, let’s first define the term. According to Lisa Huetterman, in her book The Value of Core Values, core means center, heart, foundation, interior, and nucleus. She further suggests that values are principles, ideals, standards, or ethics. In this context, values are always considered to have worth and significance. Core values then are the ideals and principles that are at the heart of a community or organization, and guide all behaviors and actions.
Why are core values important? Core values provide the foundation for a community’s culture. Core values are the framework for how we behave, what we believe, how we treat others, how we communicate with each other, and how we approach problem-solving and conflict. If a strategic plan defines “what” the community intends to accomplish, core values are the “how” for achieving its goals.
Does UCSA have core values? If so, where did they come from and what are they? Yes, we do. In fact, we have had core values for many years. Last year, as part of our path to a new minister, we had the opportunity to review and revise our core values as part of our Mission, Vision, and Values workshop with Reverend Ron Fritts. Workshop attendees identified key words that represented our values, and we chartered a team to develop core values statements and behaviors (describing how we live the values individually and as a community). We owe a big “thank-you” to Kathryn Cornell, Alli Mifflin-Groce, and Maggie Meigs who volunteered for this. They did an outstanding job completing this task. Our Board of Trustees reviewed their efforts. They adopted these new core values and core values statements in January 2018:
Love – We consciously live in heart-centered Divine Love as we embrace the preciousness of all.
Empowering – We provide a variety of experiences for people to discover their inherent worth, gifts, talents, and Divine Powers.
Transforming – Deep change, opening to the highest Good for all and realization of our Divine Nature.
Community – We build joyful, supportive, and uplifting relationships as we grow together in spirit.
Welcoming – We accept with pleasure the presence of all persons.

How can I learn more about these core values? You can learn more about our core values at our upcoming Annual Meeting on Mar 4, 2018. The Board of Trustees will provide a presentation on the core values. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the values and the development process. You will also learn more about the core values in the months ahead as Reverend Jimmie incorporates these concepts into his Sunday messages. The core values will also be on our website and we will develop other media in coming months to display our values around the campus.
