Join us June 5th, 2016, 11:00 a.m. for Cellist Aurelia Rocha
Our guest musician on Sunday, June 5th, 2016 will be Aurelia Rocha. She is an expert in the field of arts and social justice education. Combining her experience in arts administration, music education, and her research in social change, she works to improve the quality of educational experiences for all youth despite race, class, or socioeconomic status. A native of San Antonio, she serves as a member of the Engagement Committee for the Excel Beyond the Bell OST Collective, and she serves on the board of directors for El Sistema USA. Ms. Rocha holds degrees in fine arts, education, and cello performance from the University of Texas at Austin, University of Texas at San Antonio, and is currently ABD in Fine Arts Administration at Texas Tech University.
As a performing cellist, Ms. Rocha holds a contract with the Midland-Odessa Symphony and Chorale. Her connection with the arts in west Texas has allowed her to continue working in music which is her first love. Ms. Rocha studied with such well-known pedagogues as Phyllis Young and Kenneth Freudigman, principal cellist of the San Antonio Symphony, and shares the knowledge gained from these teachers through her work with local San Antonio schools. Ms. Rocha also maintains a small private cello studio in her home on San Antonio’s west side. In addition to her work with the Midland-Odessa Symphony, Ms. Rocha works as a freelance cellist playing in the San Angelo Symphony and a variety of local performing groups in San Antonio and the surrounding areas.
