Each Sunday service at Unity begins and ends with music. Music invites everyone to separate from external distractions and focus inward to experience Spirit directly. Songs are chosen which resonate with the theme of the minister’s message. They communicate in a way that engages the heart and spirit as well as the mind. Music is strategically placed within the context of the service to provide an experience of seamless flow from beginning to end. It creates an atmosphere in which we can open our hearts and transform our lives.

Each service contains music that invites participation. By joining in song we demonstrate our unity as we all become one in the experience of listening and creating. Sometimes the music invites us to express our joy in celebration. Other times it helps us focus our attention as we quietly chant our way into meditation.

We carefully chose the name “Synergy” for our group of musicians. The word comes from a Greek root meaning “cooperation,” and it is our cooperation and our “unity” of purpose that makes the music we create together at Unity Church of SA so much more than the sum of its parts.

Dana Clark is the Music Director. She sings, plays piano, guitar, sax, and flutes, and writes and arranges music for the services.
Husband and wife Dana Clark and Kevin Lewis play together in the five piece band "The Lewis and Clark Musical Expedition." They also perform with fellow songwriters Kit Holmes and Chris Pfeiffer as "Light Travelers," a band that plays all original New Thought Music.

UNITY MUSIC MINISTRY GUIDELINES
September 2009 through May 2010

Sunday morning services at Unity Church of San Antonio have three major components: message, meditation, and music.   The purpose of the music is to support the theme of the message and enhance the meditation.   Rev. Linda Martella-Whitsett and Music Director Dana Clark meet each week to plan which pieces to include and decide how individual musicians will contribute.

The Music Director conducts rehearsals, assigning parts to singers and making suggestions about arrangement and instrumentation. Regular members of the team are expected to coordinate their efforts as an ensemble to present the music in a spirit of service to the minister and congregation. In keeping with the name “Synergy,” individuals set aside personal considerations in order to cooperate with each other to present music that is rooted in spiritual harmony.

There are two levels of participation possible.

Regular members of the Music Ministry play and sing in the band Synergy.  They make a commitment to spend a significant amount of time each week in rehearsal and practicing.  They participate in both services every Sunday. A private audition with the Music Director is required.  Those who are not ready to participate at this level may want to join the Synergy Singers.  They function as song leaders for the congregation at the 11:00 service, singing the Prelude, Opening Song, and Greeting Song as well as some specials.  In order to sing on a Sunday morning, singers must have attended the previous Wednesday rehearsal at 7:30.

Getting Involved in Music Ministry
Most of the musicians who serve with the music ministry have a history of working as professional musicians. Because our rehearsal time is limited, we do not teach musical skills. Volunteers must have mastered their instrument and/or sing with proficiency so that during rehearsal we can focus on learning the material quickly.

She will interview you and make an appointment for an audition.
