A Unity Prayer Chaplain is:
• Someone who supports you on your spiritual journey.
• Someone who creates and holds a sacred space with you.
• Someone who lovingly listens.
• Someone who holds what is heard in confidence.
• Someone who prays from the heart with you.
What if I’ve never done anything like this before?
The Unity Chaplain Program is a service opportunity for those congregants who are truly looking to take the next step in the
development of their spiritual growth. No prior experience in prayer or praying with others is required. The only requirements are that you be an active member of Unity Church of San Antonio and have a calling to pray with others. We encourage all members of the Prayer Chaplain Program to attend Unity classes which will help prepare you for this next step in your spiritual journey.
Be willing to follow your heart. You will most assuredly experience the fulfillment of a deepening spiritual life through prayer and service.
How does a Unity Prayer Chaplain differ from a Chaplain in a hospital or care facility?
Unlike hospital chaplains, Unity Prayer Chaplains are not ordained and are not trained to counsel people. Unity Prayer
Chaplains are trained to do four major things: hold spiritual space, lovingly listen, pray from the heart and hold what is
shared in confidence. Unity Chaplains are not trained to go out and “minister” to the community-at-large but are trained as
a lay resource to help meet the pastoral care needs within our Unity community.
What is the time commitment?
Unity Prayer Chaplains are required to make a one-year commitment to their responsibilities:
• Serving at Sunday morning services.
• Two hours of “wellness calling” each month.
• One 2-hour Prayer Chaplain continuing education meeting each month.
• Annual intensive training.
• Other opportunities such as home and hospital visits and participation in special services as requested by the minister.
How do I find out more?
If the Unity Prayer Chaplain Program resonates with you and feels like an opportunity you would like to explore
further, please plan to attend our Introduction to Prayer Chaplain Ministry, Sunday, January 16, 12:30pm to 1:30pm
If you are not sure the program is for you, this orientation is the perfect opportunity to have your questions answered.
There will be training schedule for Spring 2011. All of the training is mandatory to be a Unity Prayer Chaplain.
